Levels

Back in the early 2000s, there were a spate of TV shows and movies about government agents or operatives. One phrase they seemed to say again and again was "That's above your pay grade" to someone asking a provocative question about a classified situation. I remember thinking if I said or suggested something that was a decision that my boss should be making and somebody mentioned my "pay grade" I'd kick 'em in the fucking nuts, assuming only a man would be arrogant enough to say shit like that to me. But don't believe for one second that I don't get it.

Every muthafucka here tries to work above their pay grade EXCEPT me. Probably because I'm trying to duck both work and responsibility. I'm constantly slapping my staff down. "Stop promising anything to anybody without checking with me. I'll set your parameters." But the worst offenders aren't even the professional staff. It's the support staff.

I've had secretaries coming in the office asking me about the projects we're working on and suggesting ways we should approach them. I usually listen and nod, mainly to keep myself from screaming "Bitch, go to your desk and type a memo to somebody!!!" My fuckin' opinions don't matter, why should yours?

Or I got engineers and inspectors going out to sites and wondering if we're giving too many tax breaks to developers and shit. Muthafucka, go engineer and inspect. Who the fuck are you anyway? MIND YOUR PAY GRADE!!!

I'm just saying, this nearly ubiquitous phrase from the early part of the decade has almost completely disappeared. I might have to bring that shit back.

well my pay grade lands me right about here, reading blogs for work research during the day really really trying to figure out if our associate that's supposed to help us is really retarded or just acting retarded cuz she don't know how else to act.

You are onto something. I love the folks that have helpful suggestion or critiques that have no clue what they are talking about. Now I have a new term for them. Zed is for the people. Thanks!

HEY! I'll have you know that I spend the majority of my day NOT "minding my pay grade".

I love coming up with suggestions for other people to do! *hmph*

I hate "pay grade" and "step," both county/governmental terminology for climbing the proverbial pay ladder. The steps resemble lines on a fucking centimeter side of a rule.

Teach my ass. I 'stepped' "to my lou, my darling" for seven point five hours a day.

@AJ
I'm not doing shit that's setting the world on fire. But at least I know I'm not. My staff is delusional.

@Sixy
My personal secretary is a neurotic. She can't even tie her fucking shoes without guidance from me and she wants to tell me how to get things built. Fuck that.

@OneFrom
You probably have the experience and the wherewithall to do it. These people talking to me are clueless.

@Tiff
I be trying to duck responsibility that's "pay grade appropriate". They wanna take it on without the accountability. I'm like "Fuck that, if you want it, you better make it to my seat."

@All
Here's a perfect example. Right now my secretary is walking around trying to find out where our other receptionist is. She didn't show up this morning. Now, she is a reliable person who is extra conscientious, so I figure she's talked to her supervisor and called off work. My secretary is walking around like Columbo trying to figure out where she is. Is she concerned? No. She wants to know who's gonna cover for her at lunch. That's not even her problem, that's management's problem. Sit the fuck down and do your job.

@RD
Exactly! I do the same thing all day long.

@Nic
Thanks for coming by. You really need to check out the archives. Seriously, you'll wonder if I'm off my meds.

@Aqua
Supervisors HATE rats. They make them work harder. You have to investigate the validity of their snitching or you won't be doing your job.

I love that term..Wish I could say it all day long to my staff. Sad thing is they too stupid to notice..They would just go " Huh?" and ask me the same fucking question all over again. Thats the problem with some folks always want to stick in their 2 cents but don't have no DAMN CHANGE!!!!
