Greetings Africans! I hope the long weekend didn't spoil anyone. I need about 4 more days off to be really good, but I can't complain about the weekend.
"The Legends Concert" at Chene Park will be indelibly etched into my memory for all time. The line up was as follows: Black Sheep, Das Efx, Slum Village (I love Slum, I've seen them in concert about 3 times prior, but at a "Legends" gig?), EPMD and Redman, and last but certainly not least, these cats.

Photo courtesy of "The One That Got Away", Beatmistress L, who somehow got this shot without being accosted by security. The timestamp says 7:44. L, did you get this during soundcheck? I know you're reading this, let me know. The Beatmistress also had the pleasure of being asked to rhyme "A Children's Story" and got splashed with water by Redman. The front row is not just a privilege, it's a duty, mama.
This entire blog could be about the feelings and fuckin' energy of the whole venue when ATCQ hit the stage. It was amazing. Ali Shaheed Muhammad, Phife, Q-Tip, and JAROBI!!! That shit was magical. I felt like I was 20 again. Jumpin', yellin', dancin'. I looked up every few minutes to see Robyn (I forgot to say something, but yeah, I saw you rockin' the shirt!) and her husband doing the same damn thing. The Tribe could've rocked all night. The fuckin' venue shut the power off on 'em. The City and noise regulations and shit. I need not to obsess over every detail. It'll suffice to just say Friday was good.
On Saturday, I was supposed to see Frankie Beverly and Maze, but I didn't get the tickets I was promised. I have to keep learning the lesson: never count on muthafuckas, ever. So I ended up just perusing the Detroit Jazz Festival for the day. It wasn't bad at all if you're a traditional jazz head, which I don't claim to be, but I own an awful lot of it.

This was one of the eight stages, the Waterfront stage. At the time I took this shot, Lou Donaldson, Lonnie Smith and David "Fathead" Newman were on the stage. These cats are dyed in the wool jazz legends.
It started raining after this. Pretty hard. So I dipped inside the Compuware Building for a second and played tourist.

Went back out to see the Regal Brass Band on the New Orleans stage,
all the while waiting for Rachelle Farrell,
who put on a magnificent show. I really wanted to check out Sergio Mendes and Brasil Brazil, but I got sick of the on and off rain, so I dipped.
Sunday I was going to the Arts, Beats and Eats Festival, but decided against it. I was sick of spending loot, so I went home. As I drove back to Satan's Anus a rock hit my windshield and cracked it. I probably could have stayed in Detroit another day and missed the rock completely. C'est La Vie.

P.S. Happy Belated Birthday to "The Epitome", Miss Ahmad. I hope it was special, sweetie.

DAWG! WHAT DA HELL?????
My post is coming on the concert.....
You'll be cracking up!!!
LOL
EL SEGUNDO!!!
SECOND!!...*lol*
Love the pics, glad you had a ball...
So who had your balls is the question?...*lol*
sounds fun, now where's my big booty doll?
no just kidding, thanks for the shout out. your musical extravaganza sounds awesome. I've never seen ATCQ but I like Q Tip a whole bunch, however Rachelle Farrell is one of m all time favorites, the only concert to date that I attended alone. Her voice is magnificent.
Sergio Mendes new joint is hot. As a matter of fact I think I'll play it right in the hopes that it cures hang overs!
Wow, glad you had fun at the concert.
lol@Jarobi showing up.
so where are the naked pics of you in the park?
And I thought EPMD was dead.
Quest was like that? Okay, that confirms it. I'm getting my tickets today.
Glad you had some fun this weekend.
@Robyn
Don't you know better that to be dancin' on folks furniture?
@Nsane
No mo' sex blogs, period!!!
@Miss Ahmad
I ran into my frat brother at the Rachelle Farrell thing. He's in love with her lips. I honestly didn't think I knew one song by her. I'm a hip hop head, I guess.
I got something for your birthday all right. You betta stop playin'.
@L and TV
I thought Jarobi fell off the face of the Earth. I hadn't seen that cat since the Check The Rhyme video.
@Stilts
Nobody dared take a shot of me dancing naked in the rain. My pure effervescence would blind the mere mortals!
EPMD was big and lumbering, but not dead.
KZ
@T Cas
Quest ripped that bitch in half! Electric Relaxation, Can I Kick It?, Hot Sex, all live!?! It was phenomenal!
KZ
umm will you be posting any modern dance interpretations from the concert on you tube?
just wondering...
Uh.....NO!! And I am paying for it TODAY! I am SORE as HELL still!!!! Can you say outta shape boys and girls?????? I ain't moved THAT much since.....since......
fuck WHEN WAS the last time I moved that much for 3 1/2 solid hours???????!
And ay..... I forgot to tell you, before you got there I saw JIGGA and ACE together at the concert. I walked past them but didn't pay attention to who they were until AFTER I passed them (delayed ass reaction).
Did you see them???? ACE was looking his usual self...... I just cracked up.....with the newsboy tilted to the side, white open shirt with a beater on and some jeans......
He was .....tooo cool......
@Miss Ahmad
You're not too old to get spanked, ya know.
KZ
@Robyn
I saw Jigga and Ace too. Ace believes he can fly, I do believe. When Jigga and Ace are together, the egos are too immense to share the same time and space with. They were trying to get me to show up at some after party.
There a huge part of the weekend that I wanted to blog about but I didn't want this thing to drag on. I'll talk to you about it later.
KZ
@Nsane
Dammit, I'm slow!!!! I just got your ATCQ reference!
El segundo! That shit was funny!
KZ
@Mack
5th and 6th grade? Man you officially helped me feel old again.
That chick looked familiar to me. Like she was on some ol' Detroit shit. I got some flicks for you. I'll send them when I get home.
KZ
there will be no spanking while my head is still spinning!
dammit!!
I just had the nastiest veggie burger in my life. I’m so mad!!! I really want a chicken sandwich right now and I haven’t had a craving for one of those in a long long time. Anyway, I digress…Zeddie I am glad you had a good weekend. Tribe looks like they were doin the dayum thing! I’m so mad I missed them. And it’s funny, me and my roommate listened to Black Sheep and Tribe all day on Monday. Had me reminiscing about freshman year in college…the good old days. My weekend was extremely uneventful. In fact I think I went out one night (Friday) and I spent the entire rest of the weekend in the crib either alone or with my roommates…how’s that for exciting.
Send me some too Zed...
@Miss Ahmad
Hurry up and feel better. My spanking hand is itchin'!
@RD
Don't eat the chicken! You're my vegetarian role model right now. I'm trying to get where you are!
I have not ever been to a better concert. Now I've been accused of overusing hyperbolic language in the past, but I assure you, this is the best concert I've ever been to. Showmanship, stage presence, my proximity to the stage, and content.
How were you just chillin' this weekend? Ol' boy is slippin'!
KZ
@Nsane
I got you too, sweetie!
KZ
Yeah.... dawg, you took the words RIGHT.OUTTA.MY. MOUTH about the comment by Robert Mack....
I feel OLD AS SHIT!!
5th or 6th??????? OUR asses were STRAIGHT UP in COLLEGE!!!!
WTF???
Zed....we ARE old.....
My knees have been saying so ALL weekend, so I think it is now official! LOL
blogger ate my damn comment!
sounds like you had a ball. i would have loved to be at that jazzfest. i bought two cds this weekend...interstellar space by john coltrane and the impulse story featuring alice coltrane. very good :)
@Robyn
When The Low End Theory came out, I was in my 5th year, first semester in college. I got kicked out that semester, not to return until two years later. That winter Midnight Maurauders came out, my "real" last year of college. Not only was I in college for the "middle" joints, I was on extended time in college.
If I had graduated on time (4 years), I would have been a working adult when Quest's heyday was here. And Rob Mack would've been in elementary school. I'm 35 and I'm ancient.
@Aqua
I've never bought any Alice Coltrane stuff, but I heard that it's exceptional. And I don't have Interstellar Space, so I'll check that out, too!
A woman into jazz that's not (con)fusion? That's outstanding!
KZ
wHO IS jAROBI? At least your weekend wasnt a wash up like mines
35 is not ancient! i'm only 31. that isn't a world away from 35.
i have an appreciation for jazz. i only started listening maybe 12 years ago. while i will listen to the stuff released today (unwrapped...), i much rather veg out on coltrane, miles and a few more. it's also one of the reason my friend fell for me...or so he says, i had more than one coltrane cd...more than "love supreme".
both of the coltranes are on point, the impulse story is a good intro to alice without weirding folk out. alice's cd have an eastern influence. alice coltrane even has an ashram in california.
also, if you like cannonball adderley, there is a release of a concert in japan called "nippon soul".
You saw my baby daddy Q-Tip? I use to be in love with him. That concert sounds like it was fun. Glad you enjoyed the 'D'.
@All Y'all
The timestamp on the Tribe photo was due to the photographer, The Beatmistress L, having her camera still set on West Coast time. The time was 10:44 pm on Friday night.
@IllNana
Jarobi is the original fourth member of ATCQ. Nobody is exactly sure what he did, but he was in all the videos and liner notes and shit. IMHO, he's like their fuckin' mascot.
Sorry about your weekend. You got them boys scared of the "hotness"!
@CG
Maybe you can depend on people, maybe some of the other bloggers can depend on people, but I certainly cannot depend on anyone. I get sold out and fucked over more often than anyone else I know!!!
It was eight stages of fuckin' jazz for four straight days. I've seen it done better at the Montreal Jazz Festival (there had to be 20 stages), but not nearly so authentically cool.
@Aqua
I don't know. In the 70's, jazz as a whole got pretty weird, so Alice might not scare me off.
My intro to what I call conventional jazz came through shopping for records to sample as a fledgling rapper/producer. Even though my old man had a lot, I never listened to it. I am not what I'd call a connoisseur, but I'm working towards it.
@Miz JJ
I think you might have some comp for Q-Tip they way the women were grabbin' at dude.
I had an absolute blast. I don't know when I'll be able to say that again.
KZ
I had the pleasure of seeing ATCQ about two years ago in Atlanta and that ranked as one of my best concert experiences bar none!! I can't wait to go see them in two weeks when they come back.. I grew up with older cousins who had me religiously listening to Midnight Mauraders when I was like 11.
You're on point Zed.. all the time

Man I've been trying to comment ALL DAY...Blogger is EVIL! Sounds like you closed the summer out with a bang Z. The Compuware bldg. looks nice, I like colorful stuff like that.
Rachelle Farrell live in concert is AWESOME. She can do things with her voice that just blows you away. Ya' frat is wrong for the lips love.
@Zeezy
The Tribe is impressive in person. They'll be back in ATL on the 23rd.
Eleven? You were eleven when MM came out? Fuck!
@Isha
Those colorful things that I took pictures of had water coming from them. It is a fountain. It's actually off the hook, but I couldn't convey it with my cheap camera.
And my frat brother was frank about those lips, but wasn't wrong!
KZ
Wow, sounds like you shut the summer down with a bang. Sorry it had to end on a sour note with a cracked windshield.
When that happens to me, I find that "how's my driving" number from the nearest truck and call in a false complaint. I know it aint right but dammit it makes ME and my poor windshield feel betta.
sounds like you had a really good time.
what!?!? no frankie beverly pics or re-caps????
*closes thread and waits til next post tomorrow*
Damn. ATCQ is definitely on the list of acts I'd love to see perform live. Sounds like you had a great weekend.
I thought Jarobi died. I've only seen him once and that was in the El Segundo video.
I got tix for Frankie & Maze (sticking my tongue out)! They'll be in Concord at the end of the month.
Oakland had it's Art & Soul festival. The only highlights were Angie Stone, Fat Burger & and Tisdale. Would have given that all up for Rachelle Farrell. That woman can SANG.
Yes, I know, I'm up late.
@Single Ma
Does that work? Are they willing to pay you when call in? If so, that sounds like a plan.
@Phoenix
That was a real "matter of fact" statement. School must be in.
*pinchinghercheeks*
Feel better.
@FA
Yeah, I missed ol' Frankie. I've still never seen his old ass in concert.
@ON
I was looking at their schedule. They don't even play NYC this go 'round. I'm sure y'all will get a special show at some hyped ass night club or something.
@Khalli
EPMD is hella underrated! When Kanye first dropped Golddigger I thought that. "Damn, EPMD dropped that shit a decade ago!"
@CC
Damn, you thought Jarobi bit the dust?
You can't stick your tongue out unless you use it for something useful!
I thought Rachelle was gon' swallow the mic. She got a big mouth, yo.
The Oakland Festival was live enough. Y'all had Angie freakin' Stone, man!
KZ
3 years ago Oakland had Rachelle. Sunday the festival had Goapele...who I love for 2 of her songs...plus that bitch is finer than a mutherfucker...lol
Sounds like you had a fun weekend...minus the money spendig.
@Blah
If looks were oil, Goapele would be the Middle East.
KZ
i've seen his old ass before! and he cracks me up because his ass is always in some damn kinda track suit like he's just performing at the family reunion or something!!!! hell yeah he's happy to be back in stride again!
@FA
Back in college, I was sitting in the barber shop waiting my turn. The barber was about 29 or 30. He was talking to us and he asked why he couldn't find the new Maze record "Silky Soul" on CD.
One dude that was waiting, a typically quiet guy, spoke up. "Why the fuck would anybody be lookin' for Maze on CD, n*gga?"
That shit cracked us the fuck up for some reason.
KZ
My mother was invited to see Franki B and Maze on Sunday. She didn't want to go, so she tried to get me to go with this old fart from her job. WTF! She felt bad that she said she would go, but now was pulling out. I felt like a sacrafical lamb or something.
